Snack Review: Breyers Triple Chocolate Ice Cream

Breyers Triple Chocolate Ice Cream

While visiting my Mom the other day, we discovered that we had the house to ourselves, so we brought out the Breyers ice cream. My Mom is a big fan of Breyers, so she always has some various flavor packed away in her freezer. This time it was Breyers Triple Chocolate All Natural Ice Cream.

I’m all for chocolate, but sometimes things can be a little too chocolaty, so I was hesitant to try it, figuring all three flavors combined would give my taste buds spasms. The three flavors in this ice cream carton were: white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate. I decided to try all of them separately before combining them.

I tried the white chocolate first: I noticed the taste of chocolate right away, but my Mom didn’t think so and said it tasted like plain vanilla. She is so wrong.

Snack Review: Breyers Vanilla Fudge Brownie Ice Cream

Breyers Vanilla Fudge Brownie

OK, this is my own fault. I do nothing but complain about the passing of the Good Old Snacking Days and yelling at those new-fangled ice cream flavors to get off of my lawn. I even wrote in my peach ice cream article about my fear that one of my favorite old flavors, vanilla fudge twirl, might be extinct.

So what do I do when faced by a virtual wall of flavors that includes my favorite old standby? Do I stick faithfully to the old friend when he shows up, after all that complaining that he never calls and never writes? Do I rejoice at his return?

No. What I do is get distracted by all the choices and pick another flavor. Because look - vanilla fudge brownie. It’s exactly like vanilla fudge twirl except that it also has pieces of brownie in it. How can you lose?

Snack Review: Breyers Pomegranate Blends All Fruit Ice Pops

Breyers Pomegranate Blends All Fruit ice pops

Pomegranate is supposed to be one of those new miracle foods that will make you live forever. Trumpeting antioxidants on a box of ice pops seems silly to me. I mean, if you want a fruit-flavored healthy snack, let’s face it, they invented that a long time ago: they call it fruit.

But I’m always on the lookout for an ice pop made with real fruit juice for a more sensible reason: because they usually taste better. So I figured I ought to give these a go. If nothing else, they’d be a lot easier to eat than sucking all those little pomegranate seeds to get the juice off them. You have to feel sorry for the first human who was hungry enough to try that, you know?

The first thing you notice about these is that they have a much softer texture than something like a Popsicle – definitely not that hard snappy kind of ice pop. If you eat them slowly enough they soften into something almost like Italian ice.

They come in three flavors. Fortunately for the fussy among us, they are helpfully labeled on the outside of each pop so you don’t have to rip a corner open to see which flavor it is.

Snack Review: Breyer’s Peach Ice Cream

Breyers peach ice cream
Sometimes I kind of wonder who eats Breyer’s ice cream anymore. When I was kid, it was pretty much the only brand in town. But how can they even stay in business against Ben and Jerry’s and all those other dense high-fat brands with the crazy flavors?

Well, someone must buy it, because it’s still around, although the familiar rectangular boxes have shrunk from half-gallon to 1.5 quarts (without any decrease in price, as with a lot of products, someone was reporting on the radio lately).

It’s summer, peaches are in season, and I had a wicked craving for peach ice cream. Not “peach cobbler” or “peach melba” oh, please, don’t get me started on what is wrong with America that we think that if one ingredient is good then fifteen toppings on a pizza simultaneously must be better. I wanted just the heavenly combination of two perfect simple tastes that is ripe peaches and cream, which truly must be the flavor they eat in any decent afterlife that might exist.
