Snack Review: Trader Joe’s Black Cherry Yogurt

Trader Joe's Yogurt

After my experience with Rachel’s Wickedly Delicious Yogurt, which blew my mind about the whole concept of fruit-flavored yogurt, I thought, maybe it was not Rachel. Maybe I’ve changed. Maybe my tastes have changed. Or maybe yogurt’s tastes have changed: maybe it’s just that now yogurt comes in good fruit flavors.

After all, the choices used to be pretty lame: strawberry and raspberry were about as radical as it got, in the old days. So maybe I didn’t need Rachel’s with its fancy pretentious sleekly black modern graphics and wickedly postmodern marketing copy. Maybe all I needed was any old brand of interesting fruit flavor yogurt.

And where do you go for unpretentious? Why, Trader Joe’s, of course. No one pretends that Trader Joe is a real person. They don’t advertise Trader Joe’s products with sleek black graphics. They don’t have a website for their yogurt.

So, I got this Trader Joe’s Black Cherry yogurt, and, with my new positive attitude, dug in.

Uh. Maybe it is Rachel after all. Because this was like a trip back in time to when I would never eat fruit-flavored yogurt if it was the last food on earth. Well, no, not exactly: I do have to say that this did not have the usual flaw of being much, much too sweet. But that was perhaps because it somehow managed to have almost no flavor at all. There are cherries in the ingredients, and there are visible bits of what I assume are cherries on my spoon.

But on my taste buds, there is almost nothing. There is a fleeting aftertaste of something that might be fruit, and that’s it.

I might try some other brands of fruit flavored yogurt for additional research, but I don’t know. I think this product may have made me relapse completely back to my old fruit-yogurt-hating state of being.

Well, that is Trader Joe’s for you - sometimes wonderful and sometimes, you just have no idea what they possibly could have been thinking. And this is definitely the latter. The Rachel’s PR staff might name it “TJ’s Wickedly Incomprehensible Yogurt.”
