Snack Review: Quadratini Dark Chocolate Wafer Cookies

I have always been a sucker for the kind of cookie that’s many layers of flaky wafers with cream in between. In high school I ate tons of Toggenburger chocolate wafers but I haven’t seen them in years, so every once in a while I try another brand. They are always made in another country – apparently this is an un-American sort of cookie. And for years I kept trying new kinds, full of hope and faith in the baking traditions of the great countries of Europe.

And every time I was disappointed. They are always filled with some nasty sugary “cream” that is made with frightening trans-fats and such, and are barely chocolate colored, never mind any chocolate flavor. And I say to myself for the millionth time “you can’t go home again” and throw the rest of the package out.

I bought these with no particular expectation that it would be any different. Whatever, they’re at Trader Joe’s, they’re cheap, I’m a sucker, what can you say?

Imagine my surprise. My quest is over. These are fantastic. They really taste like chocolate. They are perfectly light and crunchy. They are a lovely little shape. They come in a recloseable bag. I think I’m going to cry.

You can see by the Loacker website that the manufacturers, in Italy, are extremely serious about the wafer cookie concept, making many flavors, shapes and sizes. I feel that I have found my people. I wonder if they have an American office? I wonder if they are hiring?

Important note: the version that I ate is Dark Chocolate, which is labeled as “new” on the website and is not the same as either their old Cacao flavor, nor Dark Noir which seems to be another kind of creature entirely. I can’t vouch for those others, although I would definitely try them in a second if I could find them. Even the sort of suspicious sounding fruit flavors.

[...] These are no different from your run-of-the-mill (ha) low-grade sugar wafers. The crispy wafer layers are bland and lack snap, but are fairly inoffensive (they’re only containers for the creamy fillings, anyway). Both fillings tasted generic - distinguishable only by smell. Overall, I found these perfect for a cheap sugar high, but lacking the depth of, for instance, a Quadratini. [...]

I buy the lemon variety from an Asian store that also carries fine European imported cookies. I’ve had the tiramisu variety and the lemon variety, with the latter being my favorite. The tiramisu is very good also. The lemon variety tastes like you’re eating a lemon bar (you know, the old-fashioned dessert). It’s amazing. It is nothing like what an American would expect from a wafer cookie. It is exquisite.
