Snack Review: Newman’s Own Ginger-O’s

I have had my eye on these for a while, but I have resisted trying them, because they come in such a large package. I mean, I could eat these ten times and review them once, or I could eat ten different snacks once and review each of them. And I hate to deprive you, faithful reader.
Recent news finally overcame my resistance. No, I didn’t try them to honor Paul Newman in death. It was more that economic troubles have finally come to that chain affectionately known as Whole Paycheck.
Some weeks ago, before the banking system had started to collapse, there was something that made me start examining my mattress with an eye to its money-holding capacities: Whole Foods started advertising the great bargains you could get there. Now, you can actually find numerous things on sale there whenever you go. I truly fear for civilization.
On the bright side, hey, these cookies were on sale! They were probably still expensive, but they had a sale label on them, and you know what that does to the mind. I finally couldn’t resist.
And, they are good. They taste a lot like gingersnaps. Does this mean anything to you, gentle reader? Does anyone even know what gingersnaps taste like anymore? Well, if you don’t, go buy some. They are fine, intense spice cookies, and perfect for the cold fall weather.
Like gingersnaps, the texture is very hard. In fact, when I dunked them in milk they never seemed to soften. OK, admittedly, they were good so I wanted to eat the danged things instead of wait forever. But in the reasonable amount of time that you have to dunk most cookies, these did not get any softer.
But, that’s OK. They are good the way they are, and the cream filling already gives you a sort of dairy effect even without the milk.
I recommend these. They are both old-fashioned and newfangled in a good way. They are different from the flavors of most cookies you probably eat, so it’s a nice change. They’re all full of organic ingredients and donations to charity and all those things that make you feel warm and fuzzy. Light a fire against the cold and dark, pour out a glass of milk for Paul Newman – you don’t need it to dunk the cookies with - and settle in with a good book and some ginger cookies. It’s a good plan for hard times.

They are definitely hard and not overly sweet. And they are also
definitely not kidding when they say they are ginger - which is
something I love, but I think I will take this as a warning not to try
the mint, which is a flavor that I am not a huge fan of, assuming they’re
as minty as these are gingery.
By the way, I see they also have “Wheat free dairy free creme.” OK, who’s
going to take one for the team?

God bless Paul Newman. My favorite Newman films: Cool Hand Luke, Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Drowning Pool, The Verdict.

I love these cookies! My grocery store just stopped carrying them and I’m trying to find out where I can buy them now. Please keep making these cookies, Newman’sOwn.

I hated these! I thought they would have more of an Oreo texture, but they were very hard, and frankly, I think they would have benefitted from more sugar, they were too bland for my taste.
I’m not a huge ginger flavor fan, though, so it could be just me.
