Snack Review: Mariani Premium Chocolate Yogurt Raisins

Mariani Chocolate Raisins

You’d think after many years of mostly responsible consumerism, that I would heed the cardinal rule of grocery shopping: never shop hungry. I invariably break the rule at least once a month. Like this afternoon. And it wasn’t pretty.

The Mariani Premium Chocolate Yogurt Raisins were void of any taste resembling premium, chocolate, raisin, or yogurt. Chocolate yogurt I can tolerate, and I really enjoy plain yogurt-covered raisins, but these things were not at all what I expected. I could have simply eaten balls of wet Kleenex and enjoyed more flavor, and saved time and money, too.

On the Mariani Company website you’ll find this proud statement: “For four generations, we have grown, dried, processed and packaged only the finest and freshest dried fruit snacks and ingredient products. Every Mariani product represents our family heritage of premium quality dried fruit.” Well, it appears someone in the family dropped the ball - the tradition appears to be in jeopardy, at least concerning the yogurt raisins.

The snacks resembled typical yogurt-covered raisins, yet a bit larger, like Raisinettes on steroids, but the chocolate was bland and the raisins within were flavorless and dry. Honestly, on my first bite I swore they were chocolate-covered peanuts. That’s how dry they were.

To be fair, maybe I bought an old bag; perhaps their strong suit is unadorned dried fruit without superfluous coverings, since they offer over two dozen varieties. Nevertheless, the Marianis claim every product represents premium quality. Maybe blame lies with the latest generation.

The display was nice, though, with many choices. I should have gone with my first instinct and purchased the dried plums. Now they looked succulent and delicious.

If you encounter a Mariani display in your own neighborhood store, give the dried fruit a try. Perhaps the proud tradition of flavor resides therein.
