Snack Review: Jody’s Popcorn

Jody's Popcorn

No matter how much the stuff gets stuck between my teeth and sends me to the bathroom to brush or searching for a toothpick, I love popcorn. I’m especially a fan of flavored popcorn like cheese and caramel. Don’t misunderstand though, I still have a soft spot for the smothered-in-butter theater kind as well. However, a girl needs a little flavor in her life, ya know?

I’ve had all kinds of caramel and cheese popcorn and checking out Jody’s Popcorn seemed like the right kind of thing to do. After all, they offer more flavors of popcorn than I ever thought humanely possible.

I was more than pleased to hear that the folks at Jody’s wanted to send me some Popcorn for the tasting. Bring. It. On. I thought.

I received two of my favorites, Double Cheddar and Caramel (under Jody’s classification it was called Recipe 53 Carmel Corn), and Cinnamon Toast.

I will admit that I’m not a popcorn expert by any sense of the word but even so there is proof that when you market a product as such it should taste as such.

Double Cheddar: the name itself should tell you that this means there is more cheddar in the popcorn than normal. Hmmm… Not so much. I didn’t notice less cheddar but certainly not more cheddar. However, it was still tasty and there was some finger licking to get the remnant cheddar flavoring off of my fingers afterward.

Recipe 53 Caramel Corn: again what is up with the names? I should have been wary of this one off the bat because just seeing “Recipe 53″ made me think it belonged somewhere in “Area 51″ or at least it was one of the snacks the nonexistent aliens brought with them before they were so rudely carted off to Area 51. The name aside, this caramel corn didn’t taste like caramel corn (maybe the recipe 53 had something to do with that, I don’t know) but the first thing my taste buds noticed was that it tasted like Cocoa Puffs. Absolutely fine if you are actually eating COCOA PUFFS but not so much if you are eating caramel corn. Secondly it was stale. Not overly so but enough that it was noticeable and chewing it was an adventure… so there I sit with stale Cocoa Puff tasting caramel popcorn and feeling slightly robbed of the caramel corn experience.

Cinnamon Toast: oddly enough, this was the smallest bag they sent me; maybe Jody’s knew that I wouldn’t be bowled over by the first two and didn’t want to get my hopes up. At any rate I didn’t expect anything special by this point, but the Cinnamon Toast was the better tasting of the three flavors I received. It was fresh, had good flavor… yet oddly again, it didn’t taste like cinnamon toast (at least not any that I have ever tasted). Nope. Someone screwed up because this bag actually tasted like the caramel corn that had let me down previously.

Color me confused but when I taste something, I don’t want to have to explain it to my taste buds what I’m actually eating; it kind of defeats the purpose.

Just a lesson to all those Marketing folks out there… if you’re gonna sell me Popcorn, make sure that’s what’s really in the bag, otherwise, don’t be surprised if I am not impressed.

I’ve had Jody’s popcorn before and have had nothing but good experiences.
I think you misinterpreted the names. I am pretty sure that “double cheddar” means it has two different types of cheddar cheese (the orange kind as well as the white kind), not that it is going to be smothered in extra heavy amounts of cheddar. And the girl who works in the Virginia Beach store told me that the regular caramel corn is called “Recipe 53″ because when the owners were inventing the recipe, they tried 70 or 80 different recipes, and #53 was the one that they liked best in the end. So I don’t think it was supposed to be alien popcorn or anything like that!
It’s too bad that you didn’t like it, though. I love the stuff, especially the “chocolate drizzle” - it’s to die for!
