Snack Review: Dodekai Babystar Chicken Flavor Crispy Noodle Snack

Dodekai Chicken Noodle Snack

I know, when I’m not complaining about the passing of the Good Old Snacking Days, I’m complaining that we don’t have such cool flavors as competing snack-making countries – not only exotic locales and their green tea mochi, but even our sedate neighbors to the north and their maple flavored cookies.

Internet, I am here to admit: this is a thing you can take too far.

I saw these chip-like things in the Japanese market and I thought, hey, why don’t we have chicken flavored snacks? Well, at least now I have my answer.

Here’s what these taste like: did you ever peel the coating off batter-dipped deep-fried chicken and eat it on its own? You know that chicken-y, floury, cooked-to-brownness taste? These have almost exactly that flavor, except with a disorienting lack of the accompanying greasiness – they’re just crunchy-chippy textured instead.

I actually love the coating on fried chicken but somehow as a flavor for chips this just doesn’t work for me. It’s just not the same as the real thing. It’s vaguely reminiscent of that fake taste of dried soup – did you ever eat a bowl of Lipton chicken soup and get a bit of the powder that hadn’t dissolved? Yeah, like that. It also leaves a very lingering aftertaste that spreads out all over your mouth and digs right in.

On the bright side: a chicken flavor snack is something where I’m happy feeding the leftovers to the dogs. In the meantime, I am going to go brush my teeth, eat something patriotic like Chips Ahoy, and remind myself that the snacks are not always more delicious on the other side of the ocean.

Most of the chicken flavored stuff in Japan reminds me of chicken consomme soup powder.

hmmmm. i’ve seen these, but never had the nerve to try them. i actually do like to pick just the coating off the fried chicken, (i don’t like the skin), though somehow i don’t think i would enjoy these. thanks for trying them for us!

If by “we” you mean the US of A, then we do in fact have
chicken-flavoured snacks, namely cheap-ass dollar store crackers that are
actually quite good.

Mr X, can you give a brand name? Because I am intrigued, but would be
afraid to buy chicken flavored crackers in a dollar store without more
information than that.
