Snack Review: Chex Mix Turtle Bar

Chex Mix Turtle Bar

I have to admit. I have a slight obsession with Chex Mix. I’ve tasted pretty much every product they’ve made, and continually stock my cupboards with Chex Mix brands. So when Chex Mix came out with these new snacks in bar form, I was actually excited.

I couldn’t wait to get my paws on this product because not only did it have Chex Mix, it had lots of other delicious-looking items mixed in as well. I was actually suspecting there would be a party in my mouth. But sometimes having high hopes is just a guarantee for a big let-down.

The Chex Mix Turtle bar has caramel-covered Corn Chex pieces, Wheat Chex pieces, chocolate, peanuts and pretzels. When I first pulled the bar out of the package, I noticed how sticky it was. This was due to the bottom layer of caramel that is on the bottom of this bar.

Now, I love my snacks, probably more than the next guy, but I don’t like snacks that leave residue on my fingers, which is just what this bar did. I like my snacks to be clean, not messy. Why? Because if it’s messy, I tend to shove the whole thing in my mouth before it gets all over me, thus ruining the perfect snacking experience.

As for the Chex Mix Turtle bar, I’d have to say that it looked pretty cool, kind of like everything was thrown together on the top of it. However, we all know that looks can be deceiving.

It had a very chewy texture, and the sticky caramel bottom stuck to my teeth, which wasn’t any fun. I also don’t like snacks that I have to work out of my teeth with my tongue. Because then my tongue starts to get tired, which then takes the life out of me and I have to go take a nap. Also, the bar kind of fell apart in my hand while I was holding it.

As for the overall taste, it doesn’t really have a distinctive taste to it. Of all the ingredients in there, nothing really stands out. But maybe I didn’t notice it because I was too busy trying to get caramel off of my teeth.

I think this bar would be better if the caramel on the bottom was done away with and instead was only drizzled on the top of the bar.

There is also a Chex Mix Chocolate Chunk bar, but after this experience I don’t think I’ll be trying it. I’d rather stick to the Chex Mix cereal and the infinite recipes I can make from that.

[...] Chex Mix Turtle Bar Review [...]

It also had some kind of artificial flavoring in it (almond??) that I found completely unappetizing. The smell of it was overpowering when I opened the package. Even my sweets-craving Kindergartner didn’t like it. I did manage to take one bite, which I had to quickly spit out. “Sticky” and “sweet” were the only descriptions that came to mind. I usually love the nuts/chocolate/caramel combination, but like you, I couldn’t discern any of these. We all know that snack calories are precious, so this is truly a product worth avoiding.

I had one tonight, the free sample that I got in the mail. Yes, it was sticky and chewy, but I entirely expected both of those qualities. Yes, it left some residue on my fingers, but I’ve mastered the art of holding something sticky with my fingertips, so I didn’t feel that was a drawback. (Perhaps this reviewer should eat everything with a knife and fork.) Nor did I find the Chex Mix Turtle Bar to have any unusual flavor or odor. Yes, it was sweet, but again, what else can possibly be expected from something covered in caramel and chocolate? Therefore, overall, I can only say that these negative comments should be completely disregarded.

I really liked the chex mix turtle bar. I believe I am allergic to something in the bar. I took a bar to work everyday for lunch. The first night I bought them I ate one while putting groceries away then later I notice weps forming so I figured it was a mosquito bite or something. Thursday at lunch I ate another woke up Friday morning weps were all over my body, I ate another Friday afternoon even more weps and rashes Saturday morning!! Went to the emergency room figured the chex mix was the only change in my diet so that has to be it. I was really hoping it wasn’t because they are soo good especially with 4g of dietary that is definitely a winner. However I do have to leave them alone now.

I was really impressed with these, and one of the things that caught my eye immediately was the high amount of fiber in each bar (4 grams). With 130 calories, 1 gram of saturated fat, 11 sugars and 4 grams of fiber, it’s not really all that bad for you.

I thought the taste was excellent personally, and I had to immediately eat a second one to entirely satisfy the taste buds that the first one left wanting.

So sad that you didn’t enjoy it! I recently found these as a new morning alternative to Fiber One bars (which are ruining my insides and causing me to lose friends due to flatulence!) and I simply cannot believe how YUMMY these things are and still fit a Weight Watchers POINT of 2! Maybe I like sweet sticky things, but I wat it straight out of the wrapper in the car and it doesn’t fall apart - perhaps they have reformulated since your review? At any rate, the sweet and salty combination definitely *IS* a party in my mouth and I can’t wait to stock up!
