Snack Review: Annie’s Organic Bunny Classics Buttery Rich Crackers

I’m always looking for something that tastes exactly like a Ritz Cracker and isn’t a Ritz Cracker. Why do I stubbornly persist in not just buying Ritz Crackers, a fine classic product that, unlike so many other things that I complain about, has remained relatively unchanged? Because I keep reading the label on them and deciding that if I’m going to eat something that gets half its calories from fat, I could have ice cream or potato chips. A cracker doesn’t seem worth it.
But, the ice cream and potato chips don’t quell the craving for Ritz crackers. So I am a sucker for a yellowish-colored cracker with holes poked in the top and scalloped edges. And of course I am a sucker for anything with an animal on the label. Even worse, some of the crackers themselves are shaped like bunnies. I could not resist.
Of course it only takes one bite to realize that these are not the same thing. And how could they be? These don’t have that same melt-in-the-mouth feel to them, because you get that feel from fat. There is no magic that can replace it. If I’m going to refuse to eat a cracker on account of its fat content, it is not fair to judge other cracker that are lower in fat in comparison to it.
I should say that although these are lower in fat, you might think 25 fat calories out of 70 is nothing to write home about health-wise. And it’s definitely enough to give them a bit of that ‘buttery rich’ texture. These may not be Ritz but they’re definitely not, says, pita chips, either.
However, there is no actual butter, just ‘natural butter flavor.’ In the end that’s the real flaw in these; they have a slight unnatural extract-y flavor that I don’t care for. I am excessively fussy about that sort of thing, though, so these might be worth a try if you like a rich but not too rich cracker. And, of course, if you’re tired of your animal-shaped crackers always being a bunch of little fishies, Annie’s is there for you.
