Snack Review: FruitaBü Organic Smoooshed (TM) Fruit

Apricot Fruitabu

There comes a time in every snacker’s life – for me, once or twice a week – when she contemplates the desirability of healthier eating habits. And then decides, nah, the hell with it.

During the brief interval between those two states of mind, I tried this fancy brand of fruit leather. When I was a kid growing up in New York, I used to love the apricot fruit leather that was sold in big sheets rolled into a cone-shape. It was a vaguely Middle Eastern ethnic delicacy at the time. Now, of course, this idea has gone mainstream and morphed into all those fruit leather and Fruit Roll-Up sorts of thing that is sold in all kinds of flavors and advertised to moms who, tragically, think that their kids should eat healthy snacks.

I chose the apricot flavor to test, of course. It comes in a small, plastic wrapped single serving, about five by two inches. Unlike some of the non-organic brands, it’s made entirely of fruit concentrates. No fat, only 35 calories. Hmm. Not sounding good.

But hey, it’s not bad at all. It’s not that bright orange color that I remember so fondly, nor does it have that slightly rough texture. But I think it’s also probably not as sweet, which is more suited to my (slightly) more mature palate.

Honestly, there’s no way I am going to eat this instead of cookies or candy. But I think it’ll be a good thing to carry around for a quick hit of sweetness and chewiness – it’s hardier than most kinds of snacks that eventually get smashed by books in the bottom of my bag. Just like the portable desert food that it probably originated as, I guess.

By the way, I’m forced to take off a bunch of points for the umlaut and for the trademark on “smoooshed” with three O’s. Not as cute as you think it is, guys.

I am happy to see that you remember the way my father would sell his Fruit Rolls back in Brooklyn many years ago. You will be happy to know that we still make them the old fashioned way as my father did and you can check us out at http://www.joraycandy.com
